Sexual and Relationship Psychotherapy

The menopause can affect the partner as well as the woman.  Occasionally this can cause some lack of confidence, tension or guilt in the relationship where one partner feels they are ‘letting the other down’ and this can lead to a ‘sex to please’ scenario which can reduce libido.  Long term this may affect the relationship to the point that no intimacy occurs at all and both partners feel isolated and unloved.

It is important to enter the menopause with a positive frame of mind and optimism.

My therapy aims to educate and gain insights into long term intimacy and reduce or eliminate these problems early on.  The aim is to enhance the relationship for both partners even if you feel you are in a loving relationship already.

Self, and sexual confidence increases as communication skills are enhanced and introducing new life into this private situation in a safe and confidential environment.

Therapy can work with individuals or couples.  Only one or two sessions may be all that is needed to get things on the right track and provide the skills to remain lovers and not just people who have sex.

The menopause is a natural event not a catastrophe!

Attitude has a lot to play in approaching the menopause, for some women it is the onset of old age, sagging bits and awful sex.

For others, it’s a relief from periods and pregnancy, a chance to buy gorgeous lingerie, sex when you want it.  Which lady is going to find the menopause less of a hassle?

Whilst sexually, there may be some changes due to the thinning of vaginal walls and less plumpness of the vulva, there are some fantastic gels on the market now, ph balanced moisturisers for the area found in major supermarkets and chemists. Try different ones until you find one you like.

If you have lost desire, see your GP who may prescribe (if appropriate) Livial that has a small amount of testosterone in it, or he may refer to psychosexual clinic for a more detailed assessment of the issues around this complex area.   Some women think they have no reason for sex now because sex is about having children.

Pain during sex will put you off doing it again, seek help from your GP first who may refer you to a psychosexual service or gynaecologist.

Celebrate your health and embrace this chapter of life.
